Stillness is Still a Media Strategy: The Enduring Power of Classic Billboard Advertising

Written by Rebecca Ryan – Business Manager, QLD

In an age defined by digital noise and shrinking attention spans, the humble classic billboard carrying a single, unwavering message is becoming both rarer and more coveted than ever.

Why Classic Billboards Still Matter

Once a fixture of every highway and high street, traditional out-of-home placements have diminished in number. Yet in their scarcity, they have gained value. As brands pursue measurable impressions and programmatic precision, the remaining classic sites have evolved into premium cultural landmarks. They command attention not through motion or algorithmic targeting, but through sheer physical presence which demands to be acknowledged, or at the very least, respected.

The beauty of fixed-format out-of-home advertising is in its simplicity. Data (OMA, p.13) from the Outdoor Media Association shows that carrying one message for the duration of a campaign is more effective for reach and greater share of voice, creating long-term brand recall through repeated exposure. Classic billboards provide consistent visibility, repeated exposure, geographic prominence and an uninterrupted creative message.

Classic Billboards vs Digital OOH

Make no mistake, my appreciation for digital out-of-home (DOOH) is genuine. It plays an essential role in any modern media strategy. Its strengths are undeniable including flexibility, rapid creative changes, dynamic formats and the ability to deliver multiple messages efficiently. It is bright, responsive and, depending on your campaign goals, extremely effective. The psychology behind repeated impressions and low CPMs makes it a powerful tool for both brand awareness and call to action.

But digital advertising is everywhere and it is important to remember that ubiquity can dilute impact. Scroll, swipe, skip, mute: audiences have endless ways to dismiss content.

Classic billboards operate differently.

They embed themselves into daily routines and commuter journeys. A singular message. A consistent image. No animation. No distraction. Just uninterrupted, unavoidable presence. Over time, they become a familiar part of our life landscape and part of our memory.

Ask yourself this, “How many classic billboards have become a landmark?” For Bishopp, everyone South-east Queenslander knows our Elimbah, Bruce Highway site and it’s iconic Australia Zoo artwork.

Why Stillness Can Be a Strategic Advantage

A well-placed classic billboard delivers something digital formats cannot replicate: a moment of uninterrupted impact. In a media environment saturated with movement and noise, creative restraint becomes a strategic advantage. Scarcity drives value. And with fewer classic sites available, each one carries greater cultural weight.

Luxury brands have long understood the power of presence – of occupying spaces others cannot. Iconic billboards, whether in high-demand urban landmarks or remote, unexpected locations, possess an aura that digital screens rarely achieve. They are monuments to brand confidence.

Classic billboards will always be the true north of our industry – the foundation from which modern out-of-home has grown. And in today’s hyper-targeted world, it’s important to remember that simplicity may be its greatest strength.
